So i've been looking at trends for kids interiors on WGSN and have just screen shot a few ideas. I've found that the biggest trends seem to be bold graphics and vintage, however i personally don't feel the vintage vibe would work with the idea we are thinking about. The designs all seem to be quite simple, but very bold and playful, using lots of geometric shapes.
Black and white is big, as gender neutral seems to be how parents are decorating the rooms more now. I also think using a simple colour palette would work well as the wall coverings would be plain during the day, but really come to life during the night (which is what we want with the glow in the dark idea!)
Following on with the black and white trend, stripes are popular at the moment.
Inspired by the weather! I really like these playful prints, especially the clouds. I think they could work really well with the glow in the dark aspect. It says suitable for 'tweens' and younger children. Im not really sure what age we are looking at, from what I've found on google kids become scared of the dark around 2-3.
Polka dots and stars are big in this black and white trend. I know stars are probably quite obvious, but with the glow in the dark theme they work really well. Obviously we can find a way of making them more exciting by adding our own creative ideas.
'Splash' wallpapers are another print idea. I quite like these designs as I think they're very playful and fun and could work well when they glow in the dark. I also think this is a way to keep the idea of the bold graphic prints, but making them more playful and colourful for kids.
I think going down the more simple and graphic route like the above ideas are better than the cliche 'space scene' or 'underwater seen' you often find with children's interiors.
We also have to consider that its the parents who will be decorating the rooms and buying the product, so we need to find the balance between what they want and what the child will want.
Moving away from the kids interior trends, i found some other things that were interesting.
The idea of 'engineering nature' is coming through in some fabric designs. Obviously we can rework this idea into wall coverings.
As we are looking at using the bioluminescence the ideas above link really well. The idea of engineering bacteria and including them in textiles, is similar to us wanting to 'engineer' the bioluminescence. Botanical prints seem to be key with this trend, so we would be focusing on florals more.
If we are going to be more inspired by this route, then the outcome would obviously be more sophisticated and appeal to a different market. However I'm not sure glow in the dark would work as well.
Acidic yellow is another trend, combined with neutral tones. Again, like the kids trend, graphic prints are key. Im not sure what colours the bioluminescence can come in, but accents of bright colours are obviously in… and at night time they will be bright colours!
